FileMaker is Innovative
The platform can connect to APIs, can easily store and retrieve data, can store PDFs or images, and can display reports or charts.
JavaScript Runs the Internet
The language provides all the functionality for the web. A button click, a chart generation, picture manipulation, or form submission is done by JavaScript.
Unlimited Possibilities
JavaScript is native to FileMaker, so we can use JavaScript in any of our custom apps. Doing so brings even more functionality for our users. We can create powerful user interfaces that provide a lot of functionality and interactivity. We use JavaScript in many of our products to construct a dashboard, to draw, or to organize tasks in lanes.
FileMaker developers are able to learn JavaScript. It is worth our time to invest in learning JS, and it is easy to learn.
This page provides some great resources and ideas for learning and using JavaScript.
JavaScript Blog Posts
Check out these blog posts about JavaScript. We write them for two reasons:
- You’ll see JavaScript’s power it brings to FileMaker.
- You’ll see how actually easy it is to put a JavaScript library into your FIleMaker custom app.
Download the demos and explore what can be done.

All About the Web Viewer
The FileMaker Web Viewer Object is the place we get to implement JavaScript. It’s powerful, but the object is exasperating as well.
There is a lot of information about the web viewer in the community, spread out over people and years. So we put together a living document of web viewer knowledge. Check it out. Read through it. Add to it if you know something that’s not on here.
Where to Learn JavaScript
There’s a ton of resources out there that teach you JavaScript. We’ve had success at them. Here’s some we’d recommend.
